Polycystic Ovary Syndrome - The Signs and Symptoms

PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome used to be called Stein-Leventhal syndrome but that terminology is now outdated and the condition is referred to as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

PCOS is a condition that affects women of child-bearing age but the possibility that you will have PCOS can be apparent at premenstrual age if the androgenic (excessive male hormones) signs are there and you are overweight.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome refers to, as the name suggests, multiple cysts on the ovaries. These cysts are there due a hormonal imbalance that causes the ova or eggs not to released to travel their normal route during ovulation i.e. down the fallopian tubes. These ova then become cysts that sits on the ovaries causing discomfort and pain in many cases. Because of the hormonal imbalance no ovulation takes place (anovulation) and this results in irregular menstruation. If the menstrual cycle is longer than 35 days then it is called oligomenorrhea. If menstruation does not take place at all it is called amenorrhea.

The chances are more than 70% that you are obese if you have been diagnosed with PCOS. If you are able to loose 5% of your bodyweight through diet and exercise chances are pretty good that your hormonal balance may be restored and your symptoms of PCOS will disappear, hirsutism will start to diminish, acne will clear up and fertility may be restored. PCOS is sometimes referred to as a prediabetic condition as the way that your body utilizes insulin is affected.

Infertility is a major problem with PCOS due to the anovulation. But, sometimes spontaneous ovulation occurs and this can result in an unexpected pregnancy as there is no regular menstrual pattern and you are not prepared for the ovulation when it takes place. If you are able to use the oral contraceptive pill then this will benefit you greatly. Not only will it provide you with contraception, it will also make your menstrual cycle regular and so restore a normal menstrual pattern, counter the androgenic symptoms by working against the presence of the male hormone testosterone resulting in normal female hair-patterns and clearing up your acne.

The good news is that there is treatment available for PCOS and also alternative treatment!
